The government is suppressing the real issues facing the country and, instead, ruling through repression, said SLPP National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa yesterday (04).He warned that the government will eventually turn its crackdown on lawyers and even the very voters who elected them.

Speaking to the media, after a meeting at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Headquarters, Rajapaksa said:

“The government that once branded the Rajapaksas and 25 others as thieves is now calling all public servants thieves—and even doctors. Today, doctors are under such psychological pressure that they can’t even confidently prescribe medication.”

The next target would be legal professionals, he predicted.

“After the lawyers, they’ll go after civil society and even their own voters. When a government fails, it resorts to repression,” Rajapaksa asserted.

He criticised the government’s handling of key issues like the fertiliser crisis and the cost of living.

“They’re now importing rice and salt. Jobs are being lost every day. Instead of taking responsibility, the government scapegoats public officials.”

Rajapaksa also condemned the appointment of political allies to high positions without considering their qualifications.

When asked whether he feared arrest amid the recent wave of detentions of politicians, Rajapaksa responded:

“We’re not afraid. We believe in an independent judiciary. If any charges are brought against us, we will face them legally and prove our innocence in court.”
