President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s NPP won the Elpitiya local government election on Saturday (26), securing 15 of the 30 total number seats. However, it could not secure a working majority in the council.
The NPP obtained 17,295 of the 36,305 valid votes cast and won 15 out of 17 wards. The SJB, led by Sajith Premadasa, Dissanayake’s main competitor in the 21 Sept. presidential election, came second, polling 7,924 votes and securing six seats.
The SLPP obtained 3,597 votes and three seats. The People’s Alliance received 2,612 votes and won two seats, and the Independent Group also won two seats by polling 2,568 votes. The People’s United Freedom Alliance secured one seat with 1,350 votes, and the National People’s Party also got one seat with 521 votes.
The voter turnout was 66.2%.
