Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr Harini Amarasuriya has strongly denied claims that the subjects of History and Aesthetics have been removed from Sri Lanka’s national curriculum under the new education reforms. She emphasised that such misinformation is being spread for political gain and urged the public not to politicise education or children’s futures.

Speaking at a special awareness programme for Western Province education officials held today (17) at the Western Provincial Council Auditorium, the Prime Minister clarified that the reforms were developed following extensive consultations with subject experts and were designed to ensure a more holistic and inclusive education system.

“The new education reforms have in fact made it mandatory for students to study subjects such as History, Aesthetics, and Vocational Studies,” she said. “However, certain individuals or groups, without properly studying the national education plan, are spreading false claims that History and Aesthetics have been removed.”

Dr Harini Amarasuriya stressed that the reforms aim to instil human values and support the development of well-rounded students by preserving and strengthening subjects that promote critical thinking and cultural appreciation.

“These reforms were not created in haste. They were formulated with understanding and broad awareness to support a more balanced and value-driven education system,” she added.

The Prime Minister urged all education stakeholders and the public to help communicate accurate information about the reforms and to resist attempts to distort the facts for political purposes.
