A wild theory has emerged on why celebrities hide their faces at major events.
Kim Kardashian was the latest star to shock fans by stepping out in a horrifying mask at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday.
But she isn’t the only celebrity who has covered her famous face on the red carpet.
Cardi B donned a gold Schiaparelli face mask at the 2021 American Music Awards, while Lady Gaga made a dramatic entrance in a giant latex egg at the 2011 Grammy Awards.
Now fans have suggested that celebrities may decide to cover their faces if they’re ‘healing from a procedure’.
A leading cosmetic expert has weighed in on the theory, admitting that while it may not always be the cause, this could be one way A-listers hide cosmetic work.

Body Sculpting Clinic’s Dominika Gialouris told Daily Mail: ‘There are plenty of subtle ways celebrities disguise recent cosmetic work, and covering their face is just one of them.’
‘Often they’ll make a dramatic hair change, like going from brunette to blonde overnight, using wigs or heavy fringes.’
She explained that celebrities can use filters to disguise work on social media but ‘red carpet events are much more difficult.’
‘Timing these procedures can be tricky for high-profile personalities, especially with constant red carpet appearances, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this theory had some truth to it,’ Dominika continued.
‘These changes don’t just hide swelling or scars they also act as a distraction while everything heals and settles.’
It comes after fans shared their theory on why celebrities cover their faces at red carpet events.
‘Fun fact: celebrities wear looks that cover their faces is because they are hiding Plastic Surgery Scars,’ one person wrote on Reddit.
‘My first thought was Kim is hiding work she’s had done recently,’ another agreed.

Others took to X to comment on Kim’s wild look: ‘Is she healing from surgery? This is an odd choice of coverage for a woman whose face is her fortune.’
‘It’s official. New plastic surgery,’ another added while a third said: ‘Facelift and neck (skin) augmentation didn’t heal in time, so wardrobe changes had to be made.’
However others have claimed this is not true and face coverings are just a fashion trend.
‘I work in PR and this is nonsense,’ one person wrote.
‘No it’s because of ‘fashion’. It’s the same why models don’t smile. They want the focus to be on the clothes not the face,’ a second said.
‘If that were true we’d see this look at lot more often,’ another suggested.
‘This is not true. Kim was at public events the two nights before this with no face cover and no scars,’ one said.
The recent gala night was not the first time that Kim has graced a star-studded event with her face covered by a mask.
Back in 2021, the mother-of-four famously climbed the Met Gala stairs in an all-black Balenciaga catsuit with a matching balaclava.
Kim’s appearance at the gala came less than 24 hours after she got glammed up to attend the grand opening of her little sister Kylie Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics pop-up in West Hollywood.
