A new service counter facilitating the issuance of temporary driving licences to foreign tourists was launched yesterday (03) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, the Department of Motor Traffic has announced.

Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Kamal Amarasinghe said the initiative aimed to ease travel for foreign visitors who wish to rent and drive vehicles during their stay in Sri Lanka. Previously, such services were only available at the Department’s Werahera office.

“Many tourists rent vehicles upon arrival, especially near the airport, and travel across the country using motorcycles, three-wheelers, and light vehicles,” Amarasinghe said. “This new counter is designed to make it more convenient for them to obtain the necessary authorisation to drive.”

Under the new scheme, temporary driving licences will be issued exclusively for light vehicles and motorcycles, Amarasinghe said, adding that permits for heavy vehicles and three-wheelers would not be granted at the BIA counter.
