An underworld character, known as ‘Army Upul’, a close associate of late notorious gang leader Ganemulle Sanjeewa, was shot dead in front of his house at Batuwatta, Ragama, on Thursday night. The murder is believed to have been carried out on the orders of Kehelbaddara Padme, another underworld figure currently hiding in Dubai, according to investigators.

Police sources said that the victim, 44-year-old Army Upul, had been accused of involvement in numerous criminal activities, including drug trafficking and extortion. He had previously been imprisoned in connection with a bombing incident and had only recently returned home after being released on bail. Just a few days after his return, he was bumped off.

According to police, the shooting occurred around 10:20 pm. Two hired gunmen arrived at the scene in a three-wheeler. One of them exited the vehicle and opened fire on Upul with a 9mm pistol, killing him on the spot. The assailants then fled the scene in the same three-wheeler. Police recovered 21 spent bullet casings from the location.

Upul had once served in the military and later became a key member of Ganemulle Sanjeewa’s criminal gang. He is also believed to have helped Sanjeewa secretly flee to India years ago. No information has yet been found about the identity of the two assassins.

Investigations are being led by Director Peliyagoda North Crimes Division, Rohan Olugala, with assistance from Ragama Police.
