News Room : Underworld threat to suspended IGP’s life – The Island

The CID has launched a comprehensive investigation into a request made by former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon for protection, citing threats to his life. Police Media Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manatunga said that an inquiry is now underway following Tennakoon’s formal request to the Acting IGP, seeking personal security due to credible threats.

Security agencies had previously uncovered a plot to assassinate Tennakoon, and had taken steps to inform him of the threat. The alleged conspiracy is said to be orchestrated by ‘Kanjipani Imran’, a notorious organised crime figure and major drug trafficker, currently believed to be in Dubai, according to intelligence sources.

Further revelations suggest that the plan also involves inmates at the high-security Boossa Prison, where several high-profile criminals are held. These individuals are believed to have been in contact with the overseas suspect as part of the plan to target Tennakoon.

Sources indicate that this threat has emerged in the wake of the removal of Tennakoon’s official security detail, raising concerns over his safety.

Earlier Tennakoon led the war on drugs. The final decision regarding the provision of security will be made upon completion of the investigation, the Police Spokesman added.
